mama2three agony auntThe whole reason you get a period is because your body says "Okay, no egg has implanted in my uterus" thus the shedding of the lining of your uterus. So, when you get your period the lining of the uterus AND the egg are shed out.

You CAN get pregnant on your period though, but the chances are a lot smaller...each woman's hormones are different, so while some women seem to get pregnant fairly easily on their period, some women do not!

Here is a website that may help you:

No, most women are most fertile about half way between periods.

I don't think I can write an effective explanation of how this works. You should take this question to your family doctor, or a health education professional. (Write it out beforehand - or simply print off a copy of this web page - if you are too embarrassed to actually speak the question to somebody. They will understand.)

Dear Tbaby girl,

You are most fertile on the 14th day after your period. Still you are fertile from 10th to 17th day after your period. This is because ovulation is on the 14th day after period and sperm cells stay alive upto 72 hours. When you have sex during period, you don't get pregnant.

A male reader, daletom United States +, writes (25 December 2007):

The whole Fertility/family planning thing can be very puzzling. it seems that some 16-year olds can get pregnant just by going to the Prom, while some 26 year olds have to work for years to start a baby. Of course there are medical professionals who can give you much better guidance

After my wife and I lost our first child to birth complications we wanted to conceive again as soon as possible. It took us almost a year after receiving her doctor's OK to start trying.

As each month went by my wife did more research and study, and she became more disappointed that she wasn't pregnant yet. It may have been coincidence but we finally got pregnant after I got a little upset with the whole process and told her to quit being so obsessive about it - it was going to happen when it happened and not before. (Well, OK, it was a little bit stronger than simply "telling" her.) In our case I suspect that putting too much emotional effort into becoming pregnant actually contributed to the inability to get pregnant.

You already know that for every couple there is a window when conception is most likely. The time when this window is open depends on biological factors from both partners. The woman's rectal temperature is more accurate than counting cycle days when it comes to identifying your day of ovulation. The "Couple to Couple League" at http://www.ccli.org/ has more information about using this to help you conceive.

My wife is also convinced that too much sex can prevent conception. It has something to do with the guy's sperm concentration, and the sperm maturity factor. In our late 20's we were still making love some 8 - 10 times per week. My wife made us cut back to every day and a half or so during her fertile time. I hope you follow up on these suggestions and have success in your efforts!
