writes:I thought we could make this into a great relationship but hes turned around and said he doesnt know if he can cut ties off with his ex who he has kids with, saying i might get hurt in the long run as hes not sure how he feels about her, im so upset and dont know what to do....we were so good together!

 Sounds like he is still in love with his ex and has lots of unresolved feelings for her. I suggest that you dont pressurise him into choosing but take things slowly and see what happens.
He has a history with his ex - [kids] so he cannot cut ties completely however he has to be sure that he is ready to move on with his life and at the moment he is very confused.
