reader, anonymous, writes (18 September 2006): It's common for people who are emotionally "on the mend" to seek out a "safe harbor" - somebody who they feel comfortable with or have a past with who they hope will offer to help them through. This usually isn't a lasting relationship as the same old issues that caused the split are probably still there and once your ex is back up to speed emotionally they will probably split.

However to answer your question, it IS possible he had lingering emotions for her, and it IS possible that they had some good history as well. Some people are willing to forgive a lot to be with their lovers, and of course, some people aren't willing at all. He's the earlier... 8]
