It doesnt matter if you go on the first date in order to do something like this..surprise him...in a good way if ur comfortable. Theres too many women who are the same and to show u care without even going on a date shows true genuineness as youre trying to be nice and show support in a very kind way.  I would wait a while, if he is interested in you then he will call you when hes feeling up to it.
If he hasnt got back within 2 months then just move on.
