A female reader, Phoebe Halliwell United Kingdom +, writes (28 August 2010):

Phoebe Halliwell agony auntHe was probably "hiding" that he fancied another girl. You can be in a relationship and still have crushes on other people. He says he loves you, and he just likes this other girl. His feelings for you are stronger, so he's staying with you. The feelings for the other girl will fade, it's probably just a crush.

He might have even made it up just to hurt you. When people fight they say things they don't mean. It might be that he made up this girl he fancied but said he'd stay with you to make him the good guy and you the bad guy. It was a fight, make up and move on. You've been together two years, don't throw that away just because of one fight. Talk it through with him, move on as a couple.
