Sex is more potent for men thn it is for women seemingly. Meaning we men have a harder time controlling it. We can;t just switch it on or off as women seem to be able to do. We men switch it on and then have to leave it to run it's course.
Now I'm not saying he can;t just step back. I mean any man CAN. But it is not easy and eventually it's gonna hurt a little when you do all this sexual foreplay type stuff and he works up his sperm and then they don't get released.
The ways you have suggessted are pretty much your only options at this point other then non-penetrating vibrators for you.
