Was there really an IPod or was he just trying to make an excuse to talk to me?

I highly doubt he wanted an excuse to talk to you, I'd just take this one at face value. Someone left an ipod in his car. Just respond "No." and leave it at that.

Did he ask you out when he texted you about the iPod? If he didn't, then it's likely it was just about the iPod.
Interesting that he told you that you were too high maintenance for him. I'd take that as a pretty firm 'not interested' and not spend too much time thinking about him any longer.

Does it really matter though? If the guy thinks you are too high maintenance, it's either because you are, or he is too lazy to put forth the effort to date you.
