Most likely, he is just being a nice guy. But, if he is single, there is no reason why it can't turn into more than that! Tell her to flirt with him more and see if he catches on and returns the flirtation. If he isn't interested, I'm sure he is a nice enough guy to just keep being friends without any awkwardness.
