We both agreed that one of my high school friends (female) should be the third party. My question is, how do I go about asking my friend, who is now in college, to go about joining us?

Threesomes are way more trouble than they're worth IMO and can frankly ruin relationships, but booze and a movie at home on the couch is a good start. That way if you suggest a threesome and your partner goes "yeh that'd be fun!!" then its easy for you all to laugh it off and blame it on the booze if you don't get the answer you were hoping for.

These things don't always end up as much fun as they sound if two of the three people in it are committed to each other. It may not be as easy for you as you think either.
Still, if you are sure you want to go for it, it would help if your girlfriend did the approaching.

Threesome: How to Fulfill Your Favorite Fantasy by Lori Gammon and Bill Strong
It's a really good read, and the method works. Basically, you create an environment where the woman (the third) picks up on the offer and knows that the situation is safe. There's no outright "hey, you want to get in bed with us...".
The book also discusses MFM threesomes and how to set those up... totally different!
You need to go into this understanding all the complexity, it's fun, but it's not easy - especially if it's a more than a one time event.
