Unprotected oral sex risky?

Question - (19 July 2012) 8 Answers - (Newest, 20 July 2012)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Divorced, and having casual sex for first time in life, use condoms. Realistically, what are the chances of getting a disease from giving a man unprotected oral sex? Not swallowing. I know that HIV is difficult to pass that way. And the two herpes simplexes are different from mouth to genital. Are any diseases commonly caught this way, or is it just a myth?

Daisy_Daisy agony auntOP you don't know enough about this. Please educate yourself or you won't know what risks you are taking. For example, the herpes simplex viruses are different inasmuch as they are classified HSV1 or HSV2, but the virus doesn't differentiate. If you have a cold sore, you can give a guy genital herpes if you go down on him, and vice versa if he goes down on you. As person12345 says, why risk it for someone casual? Read up about STDs before doing something you might really, really regret.

I kost my virginity to my bf and got chlamydia. One time. All it takes. You can get hiv, hpv, herpes virus, chlamydia, syphylius, ghonorrea. You must be careful. This is why its beneficial to be in a monogomous fwb relationship. Make your partners get tested. Take care of yourself. Good luck.

Honeypie agony auntI agree with Tish.

While oral "seems" safe it's not. HIV, HPV and Herpes are things tyhat can not be cured, only maintained.. and you can get all of those from oral too, specially if you are not careful. A guy might not even know he has HPV or Herpes. As there is no tests yet for men and HPV. But.. if you get it.. you are stuck with something that can potentially give you cancer..

Be safe. Use a condom even for oral for starters.

A male reader, doublejack United States +, writes (19 July 2012):

The risks are lower, but the other posters are correct - there are risks.

I am going to be more of a downer than the others, though, and tell you that casual sex is inherently risky. Condoms break and fall off. Accidents happen. One poster asked you what is the benefit to performing unprotected oral sex on someone you will never see again. I will go further, and ask what is the point of having sex, period, with someone you will never see again?

I married young myself, and divorced at 33. So I skipped that whole "sowing my wild oats" stage in my late teens / early twenties. You know what I found? I didn't miss out on anything. Sex is way, way better with someone you know and care about. Casual one-time sex with a stranger simply can't compete.

Just something to chew on. Even if you take precautions, partaking is risky behavior still puts you at risk.

Best of luck!

HIV, HPV, herpes are all spread this way. It is not a myth. And the herpes virus doesn't really care if it's a mouth or genitals, it is a non-discrimatory virus.

Use a condom, be safe.

It might be a good idea to have a chat with your gyno to go over the precautions you should be taking so that you can enjoy a healthy future without dealing with conditions brought on by exposure to the various viruses that can be transmitted during all types of sexual activity.

Be safe, good luck!

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (19 July 2012):

person12345 agony auntOral sex is still sex and yes, you can catch things that way. It's not as easy as with penetrative sex, but it's still possible. For instance if one of you has HPV it can lead to an increased risk of oral and throat cancers. If you have any cuts or sores in your mouth, it can lead to catching pretty much any of the infections you can catch from penetration. If one of you has a cold sore it actually can be passed to genitals.

If you're having casual sex, you should avoid unprotected sex of any kind. What's the benefit to performing unprotected oral sex on someone you will never see again?
