Unexpected bleeding after sex...what could it be about?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Slightly awkward question here but advice is appreciated. After about a year of being single and sexually inactive I've recently become intimate with a new partner. We've had sex a handful of times, always with a condom, and twice now I've noticed that I'm bleeding afterward at times when I was not on or expecting my period (I keep pretty careful track of that.) I also know it's not an STI as I tested clean before meeting my current partner and we've only had protected intercourse.

So have to assume that I'm bleeding from the sex itself, although I haven't been in any pain either time. My partner is *very* well endowed, definitely larger than the handful of guys I've been with previously, but I'm not a petite girl and I wouldn't have expected this to be a problem. Still, bleeding during sex is messy and kind of gross to me (my partner has reassured me he's not bothered by it, but I am) and I'm wondering if any women here have had this problem with "bigger" partners and what they did to avoid it. Thank you for any advice!

Honeypie agony auntGo get a check up. It's really that simple and while you are there talk to your doctor about birth control. Can't hurt to still use condoms and birth-control.

Perhaps you are having an allergic reaction to latex condoms... you might want to be tested.

So_Very_Confused agony auntIF you are bleeding so much during sex that it's messy I think that a visit to the doctor is in order.

I have bled from sex before but never enough to be messy usually just light spotting.

My ex had this problem from me. We decided to avoid certain positions during sex or use off the shelf lubrication to help. In your case, it is definitely because of him being "bigger".

I bleed often after sex. My husband is a bit too wide for me also. We are married 20 years, I still bleed.

R1 agony auntDoes sound like the sex is causing it. I think most women can think of times they have bled due to the sex being tougher, the man being big or not having done it for a while. Shouldn't be anything to worry about unless it continues.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (15 March 2013):

Tisha-1 agony auntActually, you should not assume you are bleeding from the sex itself. http://blogs.webmd.com/womens-health/2009/07/postcoital-bleeding.html

I think the sensible thing to do is to go to your gynecologist and have a work up, make sure there isn't something weird going on before assuming it's related to his size.

Here's a tool that may help guide you in deciding when to call your doctor:

Once you rule out issues with your cervix or your uterine lining, and the gyn is satisfied there's no disease process, then you can tackle this as a problem of mechanics.

Best wishes.
