I had unprotected sex the monday after. the injection has a 99.7% protection rate, but if i took a pregnancy test now would i be abe to detect if i am or would it be too early? also, the injection is effective within 24 hours of the shot. Yea im thinking maybe its the stress that brought this on, or else its just an irregular period, common with this injection. Thanks for your help over the last few days though, youve helped me put things in perspective. Thank you!

jessica04 agony auntYou might be having the cramps because of your period. Odds are if you were pregnant, you would not have classic symptoms at this stage already. If you were pregnant and having a miscarriage, you would know, those cramps are contractions and hurt.

Since your body is still getting used to this shot, your period may look a little odd for the first few cycles. Just calm down and take a test in a few days. But other than that there is no sure fire way to tell.

Ok so im a bit freaked out. I think i had a period today?

I know bleeding or spotting(which i guess was what this was) is common with this injection, but are the cramps? This has to be a sign im not pregnant!

jessica04 agony auntSpermicide, either foam or gel, can be a great back up. They can be found in just about any pharmacy, and are easy to use. You can even apply them right before penetration. If you enjoy oral sex, make sure you apply the spermicide after receiving oral, as they don't taste good.

The only problem you might have with a spermicide would be a skin reaction to it, so test it out and see how it feels for you.

A female reader, jessica04 United States +, writes (25 February 2009):

jessica04 agony auntWhen I was 17 I got pregnant after doing "period math" to track when I thought I would be fertile and when I thought I would be safe.

Odds are that you're fine, ut never rely on general statistics about womens reproductive systems. Everyone is different, and the basic stuff they teach you in school doesn't always take that into account. We all know that not every woan gets her period every 28 days, for 5-7 days, so why would every woman be the same as far as fertility in their cycle?

Take a test, at least just to put your mind at ease.

Im not worried about getting stds seen as iv only had sex with my boyfriend and hes only had it with me, we are together years. I noticed that as soon as i got the shot my periods went, along with the pain. While i shouldve waited to adjust to the injection, im hoping this was a sign that it worked. One minute im in denial, the next im paranoid. I dont think i wil be able to tell if i am pregnant as this injection basically stops ur periods. Its meant to take a while but it wasted no time in stopping them. And correct me here if im wrong, never was good at biology, but after my period is gone i would have had to have waited for my new egg to descend which takes place 2 weeks, i think, after the period? So along with the injection and the fact that there was no egg to impregnate, does that stand for something? Im stil taking the test, this is a huge deal!

It does have a high rate of effectiveness, however, it's still not 100% effective. So I would take a pregnacy test, one response gives you an answer as early as possible though it's probably too early right now. You should have used a condom not to increase rate of you not getting pregnant but for STDs.

jessica04 agony auntA preg test right now might not show anything. Sometimes it can take a few days or a week to detect.

When starting something for the first time, I generally feel it is best to give your system a while to adjust.

Give it a week and take a test since waiting for a missed period is still weeks away for you (assuming).

I'm on the pill and I always get paranoid every month, sometimes even if I haven't had sex, lol!

You should normally wait 4 days before your period, injection or no injection.
