What a guy wants you to do when you are being fingered is to relax and enjoy it. You have to start thinking of yourself here too.
As for hand jobs, well pretty much yes, you have to sit there, but you can smile at him and ask him what feels good. It shouldn't be horribly awkward because hopefully you will be relaxed around him and will be happy that you are doing something for him.
If you feel THIS scared by it then tell him you aren't ready to take the next step and stick to kissing and most importantly TALKING to get to know eachother.
