In their mind yes. Some people feel that the truth could be to much for you to handle. Its not totally a bad method but in the end it does more harm than good. They feel like for some reason they have to protect for some reason. In some cases you can find that the person is just selfish because the truth puts a damper on your relationship with them and they don't want to face that, or they know you have a hidden consequence in store for them. Its best to tell the truth no matter how much it hurts because it will hurt more to find out differently. I hope this sheds some light on your dilema.

Depends on the situation, frankly I dont think there are many times when someone is genuine when they say they lie to protect you, it is like when I was a little girl and I had a pet lamb, one day my lamb dissapeared and I was told that he had gone to be with the big lambs and the mummy and daddy lambs, what they meant was that he was joining the other lambs in the freezer, how did this help apart from me wanting to become a vegetarian (even before I knew what one was)
Then there was the time a boyfriend slept with my mate, I eventually 9 months later found out (yes she had his baby) I had suspected something was going on at the time and had asked if there was only to be reassured that there was not, when I asked why he had lied he said it was to protect me from the hurt as it was a stupid mistake and he did not want me to get all stressed and upset. (did he not think I would notice when my mate had a black baby and we lived in a small village).
So in a long winded way I am saying that I do not think people lie to protect you they lie because it is what they want to do.
