i have been with my partner for nearly 2 years, we have two children one 15 years old and the other is nearly turning 3. my partner works away and we only see each other a few days a month but we are used to this and it isnt a problem, i have been on the contraceptive implant implanon for nearly 3 years, it is due to come out in november this year, my problem is that for about 5 months now i often feel physically sick at the thought of my partner having sex with me, this isnt all the time but it is happening alot. we are a happy loving couple we get on well together, i have heard the implant can put woman of sex as a side affect the thing that worries me is that i really feel sick at the thought of him touching me in a sexual way and i dont know why, he is a very handsome man and i am not put off sex with him due to his looks. i dont know if my problem could be related to stress or what it is, it just upsets me that i feel sick at the thought of having sex with him, i enjoy cuddling up with him and being intimite that way just not a sexual way. Please give me some advise of what could be causing this, is it me or the implant

A male reader, rcn United States +, writes (2 August 2009):

rcn agony auntCould be either. The implant delivers chemicals that can cause a hormonal imbalance. Stress can cause sexual tension too. It's like saying, "what? have sex when all these other things are going on." How do you view sex? When your in the act, and not having these feelings, is it enjoyable? Is sex, just the physical act, or part of your intimacy? I ask these because often too people get into a sexual rut. Doing the same thing over and over again, where you can pretty much document from start to finish how the next time having sex with play out. This routine separates the intimacy, can affect your desire to have sex, where if the routine gets dull, your mind will find a way to warn that you don't want to do it, and could create this sick feeling.

You said this has happened for about 5 months. I want you to think about your life before this happened, and when it started. Spend some time and dig deep to see if there are any changes that may have increased stress in your life. It may be in your home or outside. Someone sick. A death in the family etc. Just anything that can cause a mental shift. I'd start there, then look at a possible chemical imbalance with the implant.

Take care.
