A male reader, Uncle Trev United Kingdom +, writes (5 November 2007):

There are guitars and guitars. They can range in price from £20-US$40 at the basic end of the market to prices into the thousands of pounds at the top end of the market. As far as US Dollars are concerned a top instrument can go well into four and sometimes into five figures.

Many guys would be very touched by a present like this but as a fellow musician may I recommend that he is with you when you get it so he can try it out before hand.

As generous as your offer is it is a bit like someone buying a pair of shoes or a pair of glasses for you. To get the perfect piece you would have to be there to try them on and to see what you prefer. Fitting somebody up with a musical instrument is very similar to this. It is certainly a lot more than non musicians would ever believe.

If you wanted to get it for him as a surprise may I recommend that you get it from the shop with the understanding that it can be exchanged for another model if he is not comfortable with it.

As a bloke I think it is a lovely idea to receive a present such as this but as a musician in his shoes I know it would be a bit of pot luck if this instrument would be the perfect instrument for him.

I hope this has helped you.

If you can afford it, why not? I'd be delighted if I was the recipient. If he likes playing the guitar a lot, has he not already got one?
