The effect of some over the counter herbal male sexual enhancers on mild ED

A age , writes:

I know that this board is mostly made up of women and mostly younger people. Hey, I think everybody here is younger than me (almost 63). However, there have been some questions on ED (erectile dysfunction) like symptoms from time to time and it can affect men as young as 20 on very rare occasions. I have been studying this for the past several months and thought it would be useful to a few men (and women whose partners might be having some trouble). I have written a detailed review of a couple of herbal supplements because subtle symptoms and reactions are very important to men who might be in the early stages of ED. Men with any of these problems understand the necessity of the details. There are powerful ED drugs for men at all stages, but for men in the early stages, some herbal remedies are reported to help. A few men have said that the 2 that I am trying can even help with more serious ED cases. Of course, these are opinions found on the internet and have to be taken with a grain of salt. That is why I decided to try 2 of the most promising and take detailed notes as I tested them so that we could remember the results. (OK, after I was finished testing for the day.) The tests took me about 3 weeks to complete so far. Not that the testing wasn't fun for both my wife and me. :))

I am going to post just the synopsis of my detailed notes in this article, but if readers would like to see the details, please post your interest and I will post them if there is interest. I can also post future results if desired, as I may also try 1/2 and a whole Viapro. We have also ordered another product for my wife.

My ED symptoms are difficulty maintaining an erection throughout the foreplay and occasionally loosing it when changing positions. My wife also sometimes notices a lack of hardness during, but says that it does not really detract from her pleasure much. There are the prescription ED drugs that we see advertised on TV. There are also many (hundreds) of herbal remedies. Most do nothing except take one’s money. Many work to some degree. I have spent dozens of hours trying to find some hopeful ones. There are ones that help with sex drive and would be applicable for both younger and older men. Others help with erection and are what us older men would be seeking. The 2 that I decided to test are Viapro and Rize 2 and are mainly to help with erection.

First try was with Pinnacle HGW (horny goat weed or Epimedium). This is not one of the main 2 that I am trying, but I had gotten some. Took 4 capsules 2 hours before action. It seems to help some, but not much. However, I was ready to go in an hour and managed to talk my wife into it again in a couple of hours and was fine. This has been unusual for me the past few months. I also take DHEA – 12mg 5 days a week, so that may have something to do with the hornyness.

Next was the Viapro, about 5 days after the HGW. I took 1/3 of a capsule 2 hours after lunch, as someone had suggested. The next morning I had no trouble getting and keeping an erection, but sensitivity seemed to be reduced. I also had a very slight headache – hardly noticeable. The next morning there was still some effect left and the headache was gone.

Exactly 48 hours after taking the 1/3 capsule, I took the remaining 2/3 – 2 hours after lunch again. Next morning was similar to the first morning with 1/3 capsule, only better. I did have a slight headache, but not enough to detract from the enjoyment. As a bonus, she took 4 Pinnacle HGW capsules at 5:30 am and had great responses 2 hours later. She was a bit hornyer than usual and had no trouble having multiple orgasms. Again, the second morning was the same as with the 1/3 capsule, but a little better. Third morning still had the Viapro working. Forth and fifth mornings the effect had worn off and I was back to normal.

Here is one site with many user reviews of Viapro and Rize 2:

http://www.evitamins.com/productnew.asp?pid=6719#proreview

http://www.evitamins.com/productnew.asp?pid=6603#proreview

However, the prices there are high. I have the sources that I bought from at the end of the article.

Five days after taking the 2/3 of a Viapro, I took ½ of a Rize 2, 1 hour after lunch. By that evening I had a somewhat more than just slight headache and a somewhat upset stomach. Only a slight headache remained in the morning. The effects were great. My wife noticed that I was harder and longer than I had been in 10 or more years. I was also more horny and sensitive. I woke up on the second night with a headache and upset stomach. My wife had the same symptoms, so it was probably something that we are trying to catch, like a cold. The second and third mornings were as good as the first morning. The headache was gone by the third morning. My wife took the Pinnacle HGW again about 1 and ½ hours before sex and it seemed to work again. She says that she had a slight tingling just thinking of sex and had a more intense and longer oral orgasm, but nothing else was any different. The fourth morning was better than normal as far as getting an erection, but most of the effect was gone. We didn’t do anything, but we just had to check if the Rize 2 was still working.

My wife thinks that I feel a little bit longer using the Rize 2 (1/2) then I do using the Viapro (2/3). Not enough to make a difference for her, but just enough to notice. I think that I have a little more sensitivity using the Rize 2.

These are what I have researched to be reputable internet stores to buy the products at the lowest prices. I have absolutely no affiliation with these businesses:

Viapro - 2 capsules: http://www.enutramart.com/detail_XX0181__1.html

Viapro - 10 capsules: http://www.enutramart.com/detail_XX0081__1.html

Rize 2 - 3 capsules: http://www.condomdepot.com/product/detail.cfm/pid/2851

Rize 2 - 12 capsules: http://www.enutramart.com/detail_RI1000__1.html

Pinnacle HGW – 60 capsules: http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1 and pid=3556

I haven’t checked to see if they ship outside the USA. I would recommend buying the lowest quantity to see if they work for you and in case you have side effects or it doesn’t do anything. Enutramart and condomdepot had free shipping when I bought them and iherb has reasonable shipping costs. I cut open the capsules and pour out the contents and either mix them in water or put them into empty capsules. Empty capsules are available here:

http://www.iherb.com/ProductsList.aspx?c=1 and cid=2192

I use the NOW brand No. 1 size.

I hope this has helped some men who are having some problems and aren’t ready for Viagra, Cialis or Levitra yet. I may get a sample of Viagra just for comparison when I go to my doc for my annual physical, but it is expensive and my insurance only covers 4 pills per month. :(( Perhaps someday I will need something stronger than the Rize 2 or Viapro or the Rize 2 and Viapro will stop working, but for now they work very well for me.

Right TTM. So as always, please get tested and practice safe sex. I was given cialis by a dr. I only got a few pills because he was pretty sure (as was i) that my problem was emotional. But even for emotional stress it helps. I was unable to maintain an erection, or they were too weak to penetrate. This was very frustrating for me because I enjoy sex and i found my partner to be on of the most attractive women I had been with. After a few weeks of taking the pills i was back to my nomral self. I also calmed down a bit and that helped. So combining herabl with exercise and really just being comfortable with your partner helps.

Viapro and Rize2 are useless now that the FDA discovered that they were putting a form of Viagra in them. Of course, they did not list sildenafil on the label when they were doing it. It must have been a slow release form, as it took about 2 hours to take effect and lasted for 36 to 48 hours, instead of 20 minutes to take effect and lasting for 4 to 6 hours. The stuff was great, much better than Viagra and the side effects at 1/2 capsule were mild. It was a bargain at something like $25 for 10 capsules or 20 doses. Rize2 was about $40 for 12 capsules or 24 doses. Several people on one of the health boards that I was on said that it worked better and at a much lower price than Viagra.

There is one caution on L-arginine. It will activate the Herpes virus at the high doses needed for sexual effects. That includes HSV-1 (cold sores), which many people have. Peanuts and walnuts have a lot of L-arginine in them.

Well I just did some reseach, and Viapro is mostly just L-Arginine. So If you dont want to spend all that money on Viapro, try the L-Argine.

L-arginine the one by Nature's bounty is good. I know I am young, but I was having ED problems, it was emotional and stress out related. After the first few time of doing it I didn't need it anymore but I still take it because it help me stay erect after ejaculation. Its also good for the heart.

I just found this on drugs.com: "The products were recalled because certain lots contained thiomethisosildenafil, an undeclared ingredient that is an analog of sildenafil, a FDA-approved drug used for Erectile Dysfunction." That's very intesesting. Sildenafil is the generic name of Viagra. I have tried Viagra 50 mg twice and it did nothing for me. I'll have to try again. The other thing is that Viagra effects only last for about 4 hours, whereas the effects of these last for 2 to 3 days, depending on dose. Perhaps the combination of sildenafil and the herbal stuff works better than Viagra alone.

Just to update. There is some new information on these 2 "herbal" supplements. I have always suspected that they might contain a generic Cialis, probably from India, in them because they act like Cialis, including the side effects to many men. It also seemed that they have too little of any herbal stuff in them to be as effective as they are.

Well, the mane of Viapro has been changed to Ziapro. The manyfacturer says that it is exactly the same, but one person on healthboards who has used it successfully for years says that it now does nothing for him. In addition, Rize 2 is being recalled by the manufacturer and being replaced by the same with a different sequence of lot numbers. All that is reported as of now is that the ingredients didn't match those advertised. Apparantly the FDA is investigating.

Just to update on the results. I have used the Rize 2 five times now. I have taken it a total of 3 times about 2 hours after lunch and twice very early in the morning on an empty stomach. When I take it on an empty stomach, I get a slight headache that lasts most of the day. It does not detract from sex or daily activities. When I take it after lunch I don’t notice a headache, except for the first time that I took it. When I take it early in the morning it takes effect in 2 hours or less. The good effect lasts 3 days and a little on the 4th day. I’m back to normal by the 5th day. I have only taken 1/2 of a capsule, as too many men reported severe headaches and upset stomach taking a whole capsule. I did take 1/4 of a capsule one time on an empty stomach and the effects lasted 2 days, but they were not as good as with 1/2 of a capsule.

I am convinced that the effects are not psychological because my wife noticed a difference in my hardness about a year ago and I didn’t realize it for about another 6 months. She never mentioned it to me until I noticed it because she didn’t want me to worry.

Unfortunately, we all do have a shelf life. But don't worry, you still have a lot of yours remaining. There are, however, no patents on people. Who would want to make another one exactly the same anyway. Well, maybe Angelina Jolie. :)) I'm going to apply for that patent, just in case. I'll make a zillion dollars once someone starts to make copies. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx

Something that I should have mentioned and that I thought about while I was answering another question is that supplements like these should not be used without some doctor supervision. My doctor is very open about the use of supplements and I discuss the things that I take with him at my every six month appointment. ED can be a sign of a more serious medical condition, like heart disease or hormonal imbalance or even a nerve disorder. I have tests run at my annual physical, like lipid profile, blood sugar, PSA (to help detect prostate cancer), EKG, liver function and others. These are necessary whether taking some prescription drugs or some supplements. Many of these male enhancement formulas can raise blood pressure, especially the ones with yohimbe or yohimbine in them. The 3 that I have discussed do not have those in them. A person who is being treated for high blood pressure or has slightly elevated blood pressure should closely monitor their blood pressure. I check mine several times throughout the day every few days. Mine this morning were 112/77 and 98/72. I average about 125/77. These are in mmHg (millimeters of mercury). Sex does tend to relax me. :))

Patent expiration in the US:

Viagra: 2012

Cialis: 2016

Levitra: 2018

I don't know what months in those years.

Limiting to 4 or 6 a month just doesn't make it, unless you can get the biggest size and split it. And even worse, Medicare won't cover any of them at all, so you are stuck with about $13 per pill unless you go the illegal route and get the generics from India. I think those might be legal in the U.K. though. Then the cost is about $2 to $3 per tab in quantities of 30 to 100. I guess Medicare classifies men as dead by the time they reach 65.

eyeswideopen agony auntThe thing about Viagra, which we did try, was that you had to be able to work within the couple hour framework for effectiveness or you were screwed(hee)AND it was a one time only per customer deal. Where as with Cialis there is no time frame but I'll have to experiment to find out the longest duration (when I retire I guess)PLUS you can have more than one session!

Yeah, eyes. Cialis is the one that I would want, but it is $50 for 4 a month with my insurance. I would get the 20mg and split them either into 5mg or 10mg, whichever I need. How long do the effects last. Some guys report up to 3 days instead of the advertised 36 hours. The results from Viagra are reported to be more dramatic than Cialis and Levitra, but the effect is only for 4 to 6 hours. My wife says that she doesn't want anything more dramatic then the 2 that I tested. :))

By the way, I have also tried some things in the past that I thought would work and they did nothing. One of these is yohimbine, which is an old FDA approved ED drug that is low cost and generic. It comes from the yohimbe tree. It did nothing but raise my blood pressure. In the double blind studies of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, about 20% of the study group using the drug did not have any results, so nothing works for everyone. People on a drug review site and on healthboards.com have also reported that Viagra does not work for them. There are a lot of herbs that have been studied by universities in small studies that seem to work. There will never be any large expensive studies of these done because no one can make a fortune from then since they cannot be patented.

Well, even if LazyGuy is correct and it is all a psychological thing, the low cost of these supplements is certainly a lot cheaper than a sex therapist. The cost to me would be $13 per month. And another thing, these businesses are not seedy web sites. They are highly rated supplement or condom supply internet stores. Iherb's primary business is vitamins and minerals.

If you choose not to believe the results then that is either your loss or gain, as you see fit. However, there are other supplements that work for some people as good as the expensive prescription drugs. 5-HTP for depression is one of them. I am not depressed, but I investigated 5-HTP for better sleep and found some reputable medical reports that confirmed that its use worked well for depression at higher doses. So you might ask - Then why don't the drug companies patent it. The reason is that it has been in existance long enough that it is not patentable, at least not in the US. Many vitamins and minerals are used successfully for many conditions. They also cannot be patented and therefore cannot be sold at an outragious price and therefore will never be advertised. The herbs in supplements like Viapro and Rize 2 are natural and therefore cannot be patented, so there is no reason for the drug companies to spend any money on research. Any generic drug company could use that expensive research and sell it at a low price. In addition, you can buy a 2 pack of Viapro for $6.95, including shipping in the US. I don't consider that a rip-off, as that is all the amount needed to try it.

A male reader, LazyGuy Netherlands +, writes (24 March 2008):

LazyGuy agony auntPlease remember that this experimenting is missing an essential element. The double blind test.

He KNOWS he is taking drugs and will sub-counciously let his expectations influence the results. Real medical tests always include a control group who gets no drugs to see what the normal result is and a placebo group to see if it ain't just the thought that counts.

Vital to remember is that the famous Viagra made Pfizer an absolute fortune. Any drugs/method that really works for such a common ailment will not have to sell it over seedy webpages or spam.

Medical science is working very hard at this and any breakthrough will be very widely reported EXACTLY as happened with Viagra.

So be wary.
