In one of the cassettes recorded by Indian singer, Jagjit Singh, the following incident is narrated:

There was a husband who was a drunkard. One day his wife read an advertisement in the newspaper regarding the harmful effects of alcohol on the human body. She went to her husband and read out the contents of the advertisement. Each time she read of a harmful effect, the husband nodded. Once the article was over, the wife pleaded with him to reconsider his decision about drinking. Finally, the husband looked convinced and said, "Okay, I will discontinue by tomorrow."

The poor lady was very glad and filled with joy. She even gave a warn hug to the husband. When she woke up the next morning, she found that the newspaper had been discontinued.

Smoking and drinking are habits that every wife hates in her husband, except in certain communities and gatherings, where it is socially accepted. Even in these societies, excessive consumption of alcohol or smoking is discouraged. Smoking and drinking not only pose a hazard to health but also cause lots of problems which are social, psychological, mental, financial and physical. The biggest problem associated with drinking is social. A person who drinks heavily sometimes loses his respect and reputation in society. Many actions that one takes under the influence of alcohol are not taken seriously and this makes him a laughing stock for other people. His family is sometimes pitied and sometimes neglected in society. Some may even pass comments on his family members, which creates a very embarrassing situation for the family.

An alcohol addict, at the age of 16, had his share of fun with friends and one such form became consumption of beer. It all started as fun but went on to become a habit, which increased day after day. He did not realise it till the evil took over his entire mind. He gradually became an alcoholic. At the age of 20, he found it more fun to have hard liquor and became a hardcore alcoholic. Life in the world kept moving and he did not realise that he was moving away from real happiness in life. During one of his drunken stage, he met with a major accident, which was a brush with death. But prayers of his family and well wishers made him come out of it. But that could not stop his being an alcoholic. After the sad demise of his father, he, being the eldest in the family, could do exactly as he wanted. The tears in his family increased as he did not give his family any support and happiness; all he gave them was tears. he could not understand the value of tears and those were the black days of his life. He tried to come out of it but could not; he tried hard but didn't succeed.

Disadvantages of alcoholism

Financial crisis

Lack of time for family

Scared kids

Untrustworthy

Sarcasm

A good husband (and a good father), who loves his wife and kids, will always maintain a suitable distance from alcohol. Alcohol has caused more damage to relations then anything else in the society. A good husband should refrain from drinking. To be a good husband, say 'no' to alcohol. Buy hard copy to read more in this chapter.
