STI tests and the IUD?

Question - (3 July 2012) 5 Answers - (Newest, 9 July 2012)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

When I met my current boyfriend (at 18) I had no sexual experience, I'd never even been kissed. During the two years that have passed since, he's become my first for everything. We've always used condoms during sex because at the moment it's the best method of birth control for us.

Before we started sleeping together I asked my boyfriend to get STI tested, as he'd had sex without a condom with previous partners (the test came back clear). I'm thinking about getting an IUD soon, in which case we'll stop using condoms. My question is, would I need to be tested for STIs too even though I was a virgin before my boyfriend? A couple of people on a forum I belong to said that even virgins need STI tests, which confused me.

I've masturbated in the past, and I used to suffer from cold sores quite often; I know it's possible to infect yourself with herpes. I always washed my hands thoroughly before touching myself though, and I've never noticed any changes down there.

Thanks a lot to anyone who can set me straight on this issue!

I am not at all a professional here but here is a bit of information for you:

1- I believe you can be a carrier of certain STI's without having any sexual contact etc., due to genes and what not.

2- The best person to tell you if you should take the tests would be your doctor or your gynechologist.

You don't have to get tested because you'd not had physcial contact with anyone before, however there is no harm in still taking tests. Before I slept with my boyfriend I took STD tests even though he was my first. I think it's just for extra reassurance from when you don't use condoms.

aunt honesty agony auntNo you do not need to get an STI check done if you are a Virgin, unless you had sexual contact with someone where bodily fluids could have been passed. Even though cold sores and herpes belong to the same group they are not the same, and just because you get cold sores does not mean you can infect yourself with herpes.

person12345 agony auntNo you don't need to be tested unless you're had previous naked genital on naked genital contact and/or you've gotten someone's blood or sexual fluids in yours (sharing needles, etc...).

Most STI tests don't test for HIV, so he should probably have and HIV test as well. They are normally painless, just a cheek swab in most places.

When you go in for the IUD they run those type of tests anyways. It's always good to get checked out anyways just in case.
