Maybe you can do something else with your life at the moment that would be easier. Read a few books. Or go on a holiday.

He's declined the invitation once already. An invitation, I might add, that should have come directly from you. Having a third party do it can put the person you're asking out ill at ease. They don't know if it's a test or a joke or an innocent mistake.

In any event he's given you his answer. He is not interested in you romantically, but he was decent and tactful enough to site your friendship as the reason. Give him time to change his mind on his own by showing him you are someone he can respect. If he doesn't come around after that, then at least you haven't embarrassed yourself or annoyed him.
