Should we stay friends?

A female Italy age 36-40, ** writes:

I've been friends with a guy for the past 3 yrs. When we had met he was interested in me but at the time I had my mind on another guy so we just stayed friends.

Now, 3 years later we've been getting closer and yesterday I texted him and told him that I can't stop thinking about him. He replied that he's confused, and that he wasn't expecting me to tell him that. He said he's sorry and that he doesn't want to ruin our friendship. So, I take it that he's not interested.

During the past 3 yrs, he met another girl (she works with him; she broke up with him to go back to her ex) but their relationship didn't work out. A few weeks ago, he did admit that he is still into her so I think that he's confused as he still likes her and doesn't know what to do.

What should I do now? Stay friends with him? Wait for him maybe he'll change his mind? I feel so alone and wasn't expecting him to reject me. Even though we weren't together, I feel as if I was dumped :-(

no, i don't think he's confused, I think he's not interested, so only stay friends if you will be satisfied with friendship, because it doesn't sound like he's going ro change his mind.
