A female age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I am 20 years old, at a serious cross roads in my life.

I have been working in a department store (that pays well enough)for three years. I was in college last year studying something that I decided wouldn't in any way help me get a good job, so I dropped out... I also thought that because I was getting 30 hours + a week in work that they would keep giving me these hours but they cut it to 20.

I had really great grades in school and did very well in college but just didn't think it would get me anywhere.

I miss college and feel like the future is bleak because I'm working in the department store.

I really don't want to make it my life!!

Now the problem is there was a position i was a shoe in for and they gave it to someone else, now in the store i feel like crap, I have the opportunity to do another job which is 35 hours + a week, which i am thrilled about, plus more money! the interview is on Thursday... but the problem I have is that I have also applied for another college course... and i have to pay 400 pound by Monday to do it... its not a proper college course more like a higher cert.. I have to pay it by Monday!

Knowing my luck though, if I pay the 400 then I'll get the job, but i won't be able to do the course if i get the job because they will clash... if I don't pay the 400 knowing my luck, I won't get the job, and its back to square one- depression.

So basically, what do you guys think is best?

if you were in my shoes, would you just hold onto the job, screw college and save enough to buy a house then go to college in the future, or get it out of the way now?

ALL suggestions will ebe helpful, im in distress.

Cotton223 agony auntThis is a tough decision with the information you've provided. this college class you have to pay 400 for is it something that will help you get promoted faster? or maybe make you eligible for a better job in the future? if so you should really consider taking it, you are 20 right now and you have to look at the big picture.

on average a college degree or even a certification will make you more competitive in the job market, it will make you stand out from others. if you live with your parents right now and dont have a family (kids, a wife) and dont have to worry about too many bills your best bet is to go to college. take some general education courses and use that time to pick a major that not only interests you but that you can apply out in the real world. me personally i was studying business marketing but decided i didnt want to make a career out of it so i decided to switch it to health and wellness. i fell great about school and am very excited to about the switch since being healthy and fit is very important to me and i would like to help others with their fitness goal in the future.

as far as the interview for thursday if you do pay the 400 go to the interview anyway. see if you get the job and if they would be be willing to work with you by giving you the hours you need that would allow you to still attend your class.

i know how you feel im 23 right now and i had the option to work full time at my store 40hrs/wk. i would have made pretty decent money that would have allowed me to be independent, own a car, and enjoy the other things that money buys. but for me i felt it was a case of delayed gratification, so i went to college instead to help me get a degree in something i would enjoy doing as a career that would allow me to make more money in the future, since you can always work but the window to attend college does get smaller as you grow older and take on more responsibilities. but the decision is yours to make in the end, i just hope that things work out for you in the future no matter what decision you make. Best of luck, and hope this has helped in some way

I would wait and see how your interview goes. If I were you, and the interview went well, I'd put college on the back burner for a bit. I'm not sure where your from, but in most cases you can return to college at any age.

And if your interview doesn't work out, you have college to fall back on.

I'd just make sure that you can find out as soon as possible if your interview was successful or not, before it's too late to pay for your course.

I hope everything works out x
