Should I tell my best mate I'm in love with him?

A female Australia age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Hi, Ive known this guy since i was about 6 -7 years old, I'd visit his town every christmas and we'd see each other for the fornight that i was there. We had always had a little bit of a crush on each other, and our parents thought it was cute.

In the last couple of years we started emailing each other.. a lot... very long and meaningful emails. And I realised that I was in love with him. I dont look at other guys the same way that I used to because I know that no other guy would be right for me other than him.

A few months ago I moved out of my parents house to go to University on the other side of the country, to the same University as him. Now we hang out all the time and we're really good friends. We talk about very private things at odd hours of the morning and we both really enjoy the time we spend together.

The problem is that i dont know how he feels about me. He's always talking about how he wished he had a girlfriend but he says it in a way that makes me think he'd be happy for it to be ANYBODY.

I'm not exactly the most attractive girl either (big understatment there).

Because our parents are so close and because we've got such a valuable friendship I really dont know if its worth risking our relationship as friends to try and be something more.

He's VERY shy when it comes to girls, and I know that he would never admit to having feelings for me (if he did), unless he knew, without a doubt, that I liked him too.

Should I tell him how I feel? And risk loosing the best friend I've ever had?

Or should I just bide my time and be happy with what I have at the moment?

I told my best friend that I loved him, and now we've been together for almost 2 years. We have an amazing relationship, so why not go for it? You only live once.

birdynumnums agony auntThe next time that he mentions that he wants a girlfriend, ask him, jokingly, "Well, what am I anyways? I'm a girl, I'm a friend..." and you'll probably open up a whole other conversation - JUST as long as you are prepared to hear the answers if they don't happen to turn out to be what you are hoping for. If he is hinting, he'll at least have an opening to let you know that he likes you and that you are interested in hearing that he likes you in return. If he doesn't feel that way, he can probably joke around it and even if it might not be the answer that you wanted, you'll be able to gloss over the whole question as a joke, rather than an awkward moment. Worth a shot, I think...

PeterPan agony auntI think you should go for it! To me, even from across the globe, it seems like he's laying out all the clues, waiting to see if you'll take the hint since he's too shy to say it for himself. If you two are as close as you say you are, then it seems that the only thing missing is simply declaring yourself a couple. I also think that if you are that close, if I'm really wrong on this, then it wouldn't really jeopardize your friendship.

Good luck!!
