Depending on the length of your stay, would depend on accomodations you should seek. If you're staying more than a week, you might want to seek out an apartment or something. People put up short term apartment rentals all the time on craigslist for just this kind of thing. It also depends on your budget.
Before you pick a place, you might want to check with your friends if it is in a good location. Depending on where in Cali you're going, you could hit some rough neighborhoods. I hope you have a great trip!

I think if you are going to California to visit them, it would make sense that you stay with them. They may feel like you are too distant if you stay elsewhere. However you should definetly get it straight with your friends before you get on the plane. I am sure you are still in contact with them you might say, "one of my friends suggested that i get a hotel, what do you think"
