Should I stay at college or take a year out and do something?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, *ubblegum-Pink writes:

I left school at 16 with good exam results and decided to go to college to study Acting and Performance as I was keen and eager to move forward in my education. I gained an HNC whilst applying to university and was made 5 university offers, one of which I accepted - Writing, Directing and Performance at the University of York - with deferred entry (I start in October 2011) as I wished to complete my HND in Acting and Performance before moving on to university. There were many reasons for this, partly because I'm still only 17 and I want to wait another year before starting uni.

So I've moved away from home (only about 50 miles), started at my new college and it's an excellent course with excellent lecturers and facilities. I have always grabbed every opportunity I have been fortunate enough to have come my way.

My trouble is that, a good few weeks into my new course, I'm beginning to feel unsure of myself and it frightens me that I am narrowing down my options. While applying to universities last year I felt invincible, as though I could follow any path I chose. I feel as though I could benefit from taking a year out - but if I want to keep my place at York I would have to take a year out this year. My dad always advised me to take a gap year, reasoning that after 14 years of solid education it would be a healthy decision.

This is all a bit of a BLAH but the dilemma is - should I stay at college to gain a qualification that I don't really need but could still be beneficial ... or take a year out and do something else before uni?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (18 September 2010):

If you take time off, do it with a PLAN. Plan what you are going to do (travel), how long (8 months), and have a general plan for what you want to accomplish.

I do not recommend dropping out to "go find yourself in Europe"... once you're out of Uni it can be very difficult to get life to allow you back in.

In the flip side, a year off is quite common in many countries and even compulsory.

If your not sure what you want to pursue as a career, go find a job doing your first choice. If it turn out to not be for you, move on to your second choice. At your age, you have an obligation to yourself to explore. Find your passion, and jump all over it!

irishmichelle agony auntIf you take time off really do some self exploration.....I don't know your financial situation, but if you can travel even if you can't travel theres nothing like opening your eyes to a few things in life to help you see whether or not you are doing what you want to do. Remember this is your book you can add to it and take from it anything you desire, but make sure to never regret it consider it all a learning experience. If acting is the path your taking then go to HollyWood for a year rent an apartment get a part time coffee shop ob and go to auditions every day. This way you see if this is where your heart is. I did it and realized my heart was in another place. I remember so clear I was walking down the street for an audition and there was a bum on the side of the road I sat with her talked to her and well I have been helping people ever since....Your life with present itself to you, but you have to keep your eyes wide open.
