I thought that a couple of people were quite rude to him. We were all into the wine a bit and we all had a chance to get up and make a Christmas toast. When this guy got up to say something someone made a nasty remark and I called them on it. This guy is an ok guy and I did not think that it was his fault that a mistake had been made.It looks like I annoyed the boss by speaking my mind but manners are manners and that is that. Maybe I am second guessing myself but I thought that I did what was right and decent. Should I have said nothing?

Kudos.
If your Boss has a problem with you being forthright then more likely he hopped on the band wagon and thought the same thing rather than thinking for himself. It happens yes but you now are an individual who has defined himself as being just.
Happy New Years.

No! What you said was fair; it wasn't his fault he was there and there was no need for everyone to make a fuss about it! You did the right thing and you should always speak your mind.
