i'm 14 from England, London and i'm in year 9 and its time for my GCSE options. i already know which ones i'm going to take as i really really really would love to become a lawyer, i have my career planned out already. but the thing is i hate my school because there's choices1-4 and basically yuo have 2 pick one subject or no subjects from each choice and im taking

Maths, English, Science, Sociology, BTEC Buisness and Religious Studies.

Religious Studies has alot of debating in it and learning different things about people and sociology is also learning things about people and im having the hardest time picking which one would help me become a lawyer and its not easy for me to drop one its actually extremely difficult as i LOVE studying both soooo much! please help which one should i pick or atleast consider?? my school is very complicated and i cannot take both as the lessons clash, help x

hi im a year 9 in Bristol and I also want to become a lawyer too and I talked over with some colleges on what GCSEs I need to become a lawyer. It would be best if you took Religious Studies. You sound like you enjoy the subject anyway so it wouldn't be a problem. If you want more information about law an the Qualifications, just log onto www.connections.com and there's some linxed and more information for you.

willywombat agony auntTake the subject you like more, you are more likely to apply yourself and get a higher mark. Do they not offer the seperate sciences anymore, or psychology? Psychology and sociology are always good choices for going into any industry working with the public sectore

Just a suggestion, good luck with your choices.

NuttyGooner agony auntI really wanted to be a laywer when I grew up before I got lured away in my current career path.

I studied RE at GCSE level, and I thought it was very rewarding. I found it a lot of fun, and it does broaden one's horizons! - it's not a soft option, it's not a "Because God/The Bible/Jesus says so" class, you learn about other beliefs and cultures, which is becoming more and more relvant in today's society.

It also gave me the skills to look at information, research, evaluate and conclude - similar to history, but talking about relevant topics today (euthanasia, abortion, whether the Life of Brian was blasphemous etc!). I did this along with History, it does give you a rounded scope and hones your evaluating and analytical skills. However, I was lucky to have more options to choose at my school.

I think these are qualities that are required in a Lawyer, don't you?

i think you should choose whichever you feel is right.sociology is basically history and re put together with other stuff so if u dnt want to waste an option i would take sociology.

A male reader, maxsteel86 United Kingdom +, writes (18 January 2007):

maxsteel86 agony auntHere's the thing about GCSEs. If you want a high flying career, then your employers would first want you to have a good degree (LLB in this case I think). They may be interested in your A-levels but they sure as hell wont ask for your GCSE grades. Or if they do, they'll just want to check you've been doing well. GCSE choices wont affect your career one bit so long as you do well in the three core subjects. I'm in my final year of an electronic engineering degree (getting a 1st too!:-D) so I've done quite a few of the applications to jobs and stuff. I only came up against two that asked for GCSE qualifications.

So the truth is, GCSEs are used as a stepping stone to get onto A-levels. A-levels count but employers will care a lot more about your degree than anything else. So just pick the easiest one or something. From what I remember, sociology has a lot of coursework. If you like coursework (girls tend to be better at it) then do that one

A female reader, vina_101 United Kingdom +, writes (17 January 2007):

vina_101 agony auntI think you should choose Religious studies. I did that for my GCSE and I got an A. So if I can do it, you can do it. What exam board are you with? AQA, OCR or what? RS is just common sense really. It doesn't take a genius to do it at GCSE level (hence why I got an A. lol). And guess what? If you do choose it and you find something difficult you can just ask me because I'm doing it for A level now and I'm pretty good at it. I'll be right here on Dearcupid if you need help with it. You can private message me.

But the most sensible thing to do...would be to ask your teachers and not people like me on the internet who don't know what's best for you. :) So ask your teachers. ciao. xx

ingotblue agony auntI think the best thing for you to do is eather talk to your teachers, get in touch with a uni you might be thinking of goping to and have a word with one of the tutors there or find a firm of lawyers in london close to you and ask them which subject would stand you in better stead, if you go to a local lawyers they might even remember you when it comes to you doing your work experience and may allow you to do it there.

alternatively google it.

A female reader, cd206 United Kingdom +, writes (17 January 2007):

cd206 agony auntIt won't make any difference to your dream of becoming a lawyer whichever one you choose. The most important thing for a legal degree is being able to speak and write well and both these subjects will set you up for A Levels involving writing and speaking extensively. I didn't study either of these subjects post year 9 so I can't advise you but maybe you could speak to some GCSE students of both subjects and see what they think about the courses?

moomoomoo agony auntsociology easy! haha. just my opinion. i think it'll be more useful in what you learn, not just what you do in the subject (such as debating, you cna do that about anything)
