Since you like him and you dont know if he likes you too, and you can not directly let him know you like him then go indirectly by asking him lots of friendly questions through out your chat with him, by that way he will understand and start liken you... When you start noticing it, then try to step back a little and he will open up fully to you.

Yeah back off and let him make a move.
If this is only online and not real life then he may just want someone to chat to when he's bored and you don't want to read into anything.
If he does want you to become real life friends then let him suggest it and go from there. But don't do all the chasing all the time or get your hopes up.

I do the same I talk to a girl I like a lot for hours I would let him start once maybe ask a question and then he answer it or maybe he not picturing that u like him or he talk to other people I say try to let him start it by saying hi do u have any question u want to know I do that to my soon to be gf but I talk first because I look starting the convo let him talk first or tell him too
