Should I ask him out-with all the stuff goin' on in his life?

I have really liked this man at work for the past year, this week will be my last before I move due to a promotion. I was all set to tell how I feel but while out for our office party on friday night we really talked which was great but it transpires his father is seriously ill and is currently in hospital. Am I being selfish by asking him out or should I let it go ? This week will be the last time I will see him. He is coming to my leaving party in early February. What should i do ? Today things are a little strained between us, he is very reserved so for him to open up is a big deal.
