I was wondering, should I ask him out for drinks? What if it turned into something? I don't think it would be fair to make him wait for me.

After all, you're not committing yourself to anything - and you do have the excuse of it being Christmas! I wouldn't try to project too far into the future at the moment though, because you can never tell for certain what it will hold.
If your frienship were to blossom into something more, there is the option of a long-distance relationship. Not ideal, I know (I'm in one...) but not impossible either. And if you felt the same about each other, you wouldn't be making him wait for you at all, because he'd be willing to do so himself. Don't put yourself under pressure. Just have a good time here and now and see how things pan out :) Good luck and take care x
