What are some tips for couples who have short tempers?

My boyfriend and I have been going out for almost 2 years now and we love each other very much. The only problem is our tempers are short and little disputes can heat up quickly. We both are working on it by taking a time out to cool off/giving each other space when we're upset, but can our relationship work? What are other tips you can suggest?

A female reader, danidk United States +, writes (12 May 2011):

You both need to think about the base reason of why you are getting upset.

For example you can say. I'm upset because you left the TV on after I asked you 10 times to turn it off now I have to do it, I always clean up after you!

Then well you have to ask him 10 times to do something as simple as turn off the TV. I always turn off the TV after you.

You don't listen to me when I asked you multiple times.

I feel like you don't listen to what I say.

I feel unappreciated.

That's just an example, but try to give the base reason of why you are upset. Same with him.
