It is up to you as a couple to decide over the condom issue, but I just wanted to add that if you are nervous and/ or have long nails then it is probably best to leave the condom putting on to your man - they can break rather too easily when you are frantically fiddling with them!

 Either of you can apply it. It's probably easier for him to do, but if you do it, it can be a big turn on. Also, if you put it on then it is a way of you giving consent to him that you truly want intercourse. That can be important if either of you have any last minute doubts.

If you are worried about it you can go and buy a pack and then practice on an object that is penis shaped (a broom-handle, vegetable, etc...).
Which reminds me of a funny story, so I'll share it. My ex-girlfriend is a doctor, and was doing AIDS awareness training in Africa. She would go around the villages and demonstrate how to use a condom by putting it on a broom. A month after a demonstration, she went mack to a village and checked up on someone who had been to one of her talks. She went into the hut and asked (in Swahili) how the condom use was going. The reply was: "oh its going very well, we use it all the time". The man then pointed to the corner of the room, where he had a broom with a condom on the handle! He thought that all he had to do was put the condom on his broom, not on his penis!
So, whatever happens, you two are probably ahead of this poor guy in his hut when it comes to knowing what to do with a condom. Good luck.
