A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I work at a big place and haven't been here long and many rumors have started to spread about me that are untrue and hurtful. I have turned down many men here already and I feel they get angry and spread rumors to get me in trouble or make me look bad or maybe its jealous females. I don't know how to handle this it makes me upset and I don't want to lose my job. What should I do?? Do I confront ppl if I hear they say stuff and make thngs worse?? Or just let it go and keep telling myself I know its not true and that's all that matters. Is this an issue in every work place??

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 April 2009):

Yeah it can happen in the workplace, it can even get to the point the point of bullying which is also far too common.

Don't let it bother you unless people start treating you badly, the best way to handle a ridiculous rumour is to laugh it off. If people see that it effects you negatively then they will enjoy that and the rumour will have served its purpose, but if they see it has no effect or you are even able to turn it into something funny then they'll gain no satisfaction or will respect more for being able laugh things off.

I had a job in a supermarket before and one of the other staff members took a dislike to me and started spreading runours that I was masterbating in the toilet at lunch time. So basically everytime I went to the toilet for a while after the rumour begun, I'd joke in someway about going to have a wank. Or I'd say I was going to the toilet and wink at him. People thought this was hilarious and he was able to see that I couldn't give a damn and there were no more rumours spread about me.

I guess the point of my rant is to say that people that start rumours are pathetic and should be laughed at, if it gets to the point of bullying then talk to your supervisor.

A female reader, audie Zimbabwe +, writes (9 April 2009):

audie agony auntif its not true then pay no attention to it. confronting those people would be reducing yourself to their level. be the bigger person- let it go and let them be petty and childish on their own. soon other people will realise that its just rumours.
