Reconsidering a job offer after this farce

A male United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I have recently accepted a 6 month position at a big company. It is quite far away from home (2 and a half hours away), and very kindly the company have offered to put me up in accommodation that they own, for free so i wouldn't have to pay bills etc. Which is absolutely amazing.

However, I start on Monday, and they said I'd hear something this week from them about accommodation and first day routine etc. I've heard nothing, until today when I emailed them about it. It's now become a bit of a farce effort as they asked me when I'd be able to move in and if I could get to the company. I said I could drive and then the next thing they're sending a taxi to pick me up from an airport, which is nowhere near me, and also I won't even need to be at an airport!

I'm now reconsidering taking the job as this has really made me feel like crap and that I'm doing someone else's job for them and that they're not organised at all!

anyone with any advice whether or not I should continue with the job or reject it after what's happened?

Aunty BimBim agony auntSometimes it takes just one cog in the wheel to stuff up the whole information chain .....

I am aware my answer is two days after your initial enquiry so I hope the situation has been resolved. However, I think contact them again, ask to speak with the person who is responsible for organising/coordinating new employees. If you are not passed up to somebody with some authority then speak to whoever you can. Explain your concern and the fact the information you have been given conflicts with previous information. Stay calm and polite. Make sure you clarify everything and then ask if it can be sent to you via email so that you have a record.

If you ARE offered less at this point than previous promised then ask why that is. It could still be a great job, once you clear this hurdle.

Good luck

Honeypie agony auntShit happens OP,

You haven't even worked a day there so you really don't know if someone dropped the ball on this or if the company OVERALL is a messy situation.

Make sure they KNOW not to pick you up (if you don't need it) make sure you have an address of where you are to live and work.

Is it in your contract that they provide FREE accommodation? Because that doesn't sound normal unless you are middle management or up.

I got a job at a 5-star hotel in London ( a long time ago) and they DID provide a room, but rent came out of my pay check (was much cheaper than getting a room elsewhere).

At first, it all seemed like a cluster fuck (to be mild) about everything from uniforms, to room, hours, etc. But it got sorted out and it was one of the best experiences I have had in a long time.

Go for it, if they STILL mess up 30-90 days in (I presume you get a 3 months probations or trial period?) if they do, you can tell them no thanks. If it seems crazy and disorganized - start looking for something else.
