Questions after taking emergency contraception

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

dear cupid,

a week ago today, i was hanging out with this guy that i used to "talk" to. we got a little carried away and ended up having intercourse. he didn't have any protection, and we don't think he came inside of me...buuut just to be sure, we agreed that i was going to take emergency contraception. soo, i ended up going and getting next choice on wednesday morning (it had been around 30-something hours since we had sex).

that day was the last day of my period; it was a normal cycle that stopped several hours before we had sex. my best friend took plan b a few months ago, and she ended up being, like, a month late for her next period. i, on the other hand, think that i started today--for the past couple of days, i've had a teeny-tiny little bit of spotting, and today, it's looking like i've got a normal flow going on.

my question is, is this normal? and if this is, indeed, my period, what should i expect from this cycle--like, do you think it's gonna be normal or be shorter or longer, or what??? i'd really like to hear from anyone who thinks they can help, buuut i would prefer to hear from people who have taken next choice, plan b, or other types of emergency contraception. thanks in advance. tennisstar88 agony auntRead about the side effects of taking Plan B that came in the box.

When used as directed, Plan B One-Step® is safe and effective. Side effects may include changes in your period, nausea, lower abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness. Some women may have changes in their period, a heavier or lighter next period, or a period that is early or late. If your period is more than a week late, you may be pregnant. If you have severe abdominal pain, you may have an ectopic pregnancy, and should get immediate medical attention.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (2 April 2012):

I took plan b when a condom broke. Within a couple of days, I was bleeding heavier than my normal period. It unfortunately lasted for 3 days longer than my usual period too. I also gained between 15-20 lbs in the week or so after taking plan b, and it gave me the worst menstrual migraine and PMS I'd ever experienced.

BUT, my reaction to this medication was extreme and I had severe endometriosis and anemia when I took it. If you haven't already, read the informational leaflet and instructions that came with the medication. It will describe what you may experience after taking the pill and give you a better idea as to what you can expect as far as side effects are concerned.

Well, at least you are not pregnant. You should ask the doctor or pharmacist where you got the pill about the side effects but it sounds about right. In future you should take responsibility for your body and always have condoms. And make sure he uses it.

katiekate agony auntI've taken emergency contraception a few times. It can definitely affect your next period, but the fact that you (may) have gotten your next period already seems a little odd. Of course, everyone's body works differently, but my next period always came on time or a few days late. However, the boost of hormones can definitely affect the cycle.

Do you take birth control pills, or maybe recently stopped taking them? If so, this can really screw with your cycle as well. I messed up my pills once, missed 4 or 5, and started my period 2 weeks early because of it.

Considering you had sex on the last day of your period, the chance of you getting pregnant is virtually none, but it's good that you went ahead and took this extra precaution anyway. If you are not just spotting, but are in fact what seems to be a normal flow period, I would expect that it will be normal (4 or 5 days, maybe).

However, I will say that I had unsafe sex once, took emergency contraception within 72 hours, and ended up pregnant! If a little more time passes, and if your "period" that you're experiencing now seems lighter or shorter, or you have any sort of pregnancy symptoms, you may want to take a pregnancy test, just in case. Could be implantation bleeding (which happens about a week after fertilization of the egg).
