We decided that we would remain very good friends and would try and talk to each other. However, I was wondering can I ask my ex girlfriend if she's seeing someone else or would that be inappropriate in our new current relationship?

You broke up. That's as far as it goes. Don't ask.

Not only is it inappropriate, but it'll make her suspicious of your motives in agreeing to stay just friends.

It's actually none of your business whether she is seeing someone or not. I use the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, meaning don't go asking about something that you are afraid of hearing the answer to and won't like what you're going to hear. If she tells yes she is seeing someone then that's a thorn in your side. What you want to hear is no she's not..but there's that possibility of her saying yes she is. Just avoid jealousy and don't ask!
