Proper behaviour at a hotel?

When you are at a hotel, are you suppose to leave a tip for the maid? If so how much? Where should I leave the tip at? Do you tip each day or leave the tip when you are checking out?

I once read that in the USA, a decent tip to give a maid is $5, just once when you leave.

C. Grant agony auntIt depends where you are. In North America, it's not expected. But if you've left them with a particular mess, beyond what they should reasonably expect, then by all means you should.

In Europe, and particularly if you're going to be in the same room for a while, it's smart to leave them something each day.
