writes: Hi,i missed a period three weeks ago and a week i went to a clinic for a urine test, it came back negative. A few days later i took a HPT, negative again and a week later i took another HPT negative again. I went into hospital today and they took a urine sample down to the lab and its come back negative. But my body is changing in so many ways and ive never skipped a period before. I have all the symptoms and its not wishful thinking here, i genuinely am changing inside, my body is just developing. I may sound crazy cos i know by this stage urine samples should show up, but is it possible that only a blood sample will show up in my case? I've read and heard some stories of women who didnt get a positive urine test til 20 weeks....x

Sweetheart it could be something else that is giving you the symptons of pregnancy i.e. bloating of the stomach or change in breasts etc.
I would definitely go and see my GP and ask about an ultrasound, I was 15 and I ballooned up to about 6 months pregnant and I was constantly being asked when I last had sex, they didn't want to believe me when I said I was not sexually active.
Now I am not trying to worry you but mine eventually turned out to be ovarian cysts (2) that crushed my right ovary but my periods had stopped and I was in the end in a lot of pain i.e. worse than appendicitis.
Don't leave this as there are a lot of things that can be done to prevent surgery if it comes to it so definitely ask for an ultrasound.
Have you had any worries at the moment apart from this pregnancy scare, there are times in your life when you can miss periods without actually being pregnant, if you have gone on a long trip or you are stressed out about something it is not uncommon. Just because it hasn't happened in the past doesn't mean that it can't now.
Don't constantly assume you are pregnant unless you are hoping in a sense that you are and you have had unprotected sex within the last 3 - 4 months.
Keep us posted though.

There are rare conditions that cause urine tests to show up as false negative (i.e. you are pregnant but the test indicates you are not). However, this is rare. Urine tests for pregnancy have a very good rate of sensitivity after you have missed a period as these tests look for the HGC (human chorionic gonadotropin) level which goes up steadily after conception. If you don't feel your usual self and you have missed a period then I suggest you see your GP for some blood tests that look at your hormone levels (particularly testosterone, prolactin, lutenising hormone and folicile-stimulating hormone) - this may explain your symptoms and it is worth getting checked out just to put your mind at ease. If that comes back negative and you still feel pregnant ask your doctor for an ultrasound referral and a blood test. However, you should be aware that many GP's will refuse a blood test for pregnancy as they believe the urine test is adequate.
