Pregnancy Test Came Up Negative Instantly - Too Quickly to Be Accurate?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I just took a pregnancy test for the first time ever...it was the CVS equivalent of the FirstResponse one, the kind that shows a blue stripe in one circle if you are not pregnant and in 2 circles if you are. It says the results can show as early as 2 minutes after taking the test, but mine came up negative pretty much instantly. I waited 10 minutes and it stayed negative, but does the fact that it came up even before 2 minutes mean it might not be accurate?

I'm on continuous birth control, so I wouldn't know if I missed a period. If I am pregnant, I am probably almost 3 months along, since I have been using 2 forms of birth control (pill and condoms) since early January. Before that we just used condoms.

A few weeks ago, I had some symptoms that are sometimes associated with pregnancy, but are also associated with PMS (really emotional, sore breasts, mood swings), and when they went away I figured they were just PMS symptoms (which I guess you can still get even on continuous BC?)

But today I was in a dressing room and I realized my stomach had ballooned overnight...I have a big chunk sticking out right above my lady parts. I am a pear shape, so gaining weight on my stomach like that is weird...I don't think it's ever happened before. I swear, it looks like I have a baby bump!

I took a test and it was negative, so I am probably just being paranoid, but is it possible that I could still be pregnant? Does the fact that the test showed negative instantly instead of after 2 minutes mean anything?

You can always just take the test again. However, I don't think you're pregnant, there's always a slight chance you could be but between being on birth control AND the pregnancy test coming out negative, it's highly unlikely that you are pregnant.

the physical symptoms could just be related to hormonal changes in your body, maybe as a result of the birth control or PMS. the increase of size in your midsection could be water retention or bloating - certainly if it literally happened overnight. there's more reasons for those physical changes besides just pregnancy, and the likelihood that you're pregnant is small.

person12345 agony auntIf you're worried take another test and/or see a doctor.

But the pill commonly causes pregnancy like symptoms and if you've been careful about taking the pill and have been using condoms, I VERY highly doubt there's a chance you're pregnant.

Having a pregnancy test show instantly negative doesn't mean it is inaccurate. The most surefire way to tell if you are or are not is to get tested by a doctor. I have taken many pregnancy tests (first response) and they show negative almost immediately. They have never been wrong. In general they are very accurate

Symptoms of pregnancy can be inter swapped for PMS symptoms. The bump you noticed was probably just water weight gain from your continuous BC. A baby bump would not just show up overnight, it would grow slowly and continuously. If you just started your BC a few months ago it is also very common to gain weight. The symptoms that you should really look out for are growing breasts, darkening of the areola (nipple), morning sickness, and fatigue. More than likely it is just your body adjusting to the new hormonal balance.

If you're that worried take another test. Or go to a doctor to find out for sure.
