Preganancy and abortion help, please!

Question - (23 December 2006) 6 Answers - (Newest, 3 January 2007)
A female Denmark, anonymous writes:

I am 18 and normally my boyfriend and I take care to use precautions when having sex. I am on the pill, but recently due to exam stress I have happened to miss approx. 3-4 pills in a row and we have had 'unprotected' sex twice(without him coming inside me) I then took the morning after pill on wednesday(which was about 24 hours after we had sex). Now, onto saturday, my period is about a week and a half late. I think I am pregnant. Before anyone gives me a lecture about being old enough to know better, i am in a mature and serious relationship and mistakes do happen, so all I need is help and guidance-fast. This would be very much appreciated.

What to dO?? I am based in Edinburgh, and what with it being so close to Christmas it will be hard to find any open practices. I am 100% sure that if I am pregnant, I do not want to keep it as my education(i am at university) and every other aspect of my life would suffer. So I know that if need be, I want an abortion. Can anyone also tell me about the different methods of abortion? I didn't get taught this at school.

Many thanks for everyone's time

Oh sorry I didn't mean to be rude, I have just been going out of my mind with worry and went to see my boyfriend in manchester as he is home while we're off uni. Since being there we've not had internet access as he has been staying in his brother's new flat with nothing installed just yet. Therefore haven't checked responses since the first two posts. I got back home today and this is the first that I have been on the internet. Thanks very very much though everyone, I do appreciate your help. I started my period today, which was about three weeeks late but I am sure it is fine. Will make another doctor's appointment in case. thanks again

Yeah, it's pretty rude, in my opinion, to ask for help, have many people spend considerable time giving advice only to never hear any feedback or update. Thoughtless and selfish, perhaps.

Nikita agony auntHi there, well Pete's answer has covered your question pretty well but one thing i will say is that ive taken the morning after pill in the past and my period was late also. This can happen with the morning after pill. Sometimes, your period can be early or sometimes late so I think this is whats happened with you plus, as Pete says, stress can be a very big factor in causing late periods. The morning after pill is ususally pretty effective when taken within the 72 hrs window so I would say that its unlikely your are pregnant. I know you're worried though so I would suggest popping along to your local chemist and asking to speak to the pharmisist. They are a plethora of information and will be able to advice you and settle your mind a little seeing as you cant get to a doctor at the moment. These things always seem to happen near xmas which makes it even worse. it happeend to me over one xmas too so i know how you feel! Anyway, try not to worry too much, easier said than done but do look on those links that Pete gave you and after xmas if you still havent had your period than take a pregnancy test. Good luck okay. let us know what happenedx

Hi,

Based on the information you have given I would say it is very, VERY, VERY unlikely that you are pregnant and that it is too early for you to be able to tell if you are.

Periods can be delayed well over a month when you are stressed out from pregnancy worry alone, you are also stressed out from your exams so that could be making things even worse for you.

The best thing you can do is book an appointment with your GP or sexual health clinic as this is where you will be given proper medical advice and referred to have an abortion if it turns out you are pregnant and decide to go down that route. I don't know this for sure, but I believe in Scotland you can be given the Abortion Pill for free if you are under 9 weeks pregnant (In England, you have to pay). This is something you should ask about. You should know there are psychological and physical risks to having an abortion.

Brook is a charity for people under the age of 25 and give confidential sexual health advice. You can call them from 27th December (9am - 5pm Mon - Fri) on 0800 0185 023 (they are currently closed for Christmas). They also have a recorded information line (24 hours) on 0207 950 7700.

Here are some links from their website:

You could also call the Scotland NHS Health Advice line on 08454 24 24 24, or their website is: www.nhs24.com

I really must stress though, that it is too early for you to tell that you are pregnant and I would be inclined, right now, to put it down to stress. I hope though things work out for the best. I'm afraid though that, for a little while at least, you're going to have to wait this out before you know either way for sure. All the best. Peter
