Yes, you can have marginal vaginal sex this way but not with much penetration. I fully agree with "zelgamer" that spooning is a wonderful way to sleep with a partner. It is loving, protective and very comfortable - at least for periods of time through the night. It is fantastic to hold a woman from behind as you fall asleep, particularly with your satisfied member firmly planted against her behind. In my case, I tend to occasionally flip-flop to various positions, but I do not think that "spooning" is a very effective sexual intercourse position.

You can have sex while spooning, through the vagina, it does not have to be "rear entry". However, spooning is generally just what you said it is, cuddling. For instance, when my wife and I sleep at night, her back is to my chest, my arms are wrapped around her, and we are both on our sides, we sleep spooning. Hope I helped.
