Heya i just wanted to know if you knew of any pill or something that can prevent your periods for around about a week. Its just because i am due when i am going away for the weekend and i could do without the hassle of periods. This isn't really about relationships but i just wondered if you could get anything at a chemist?

Thanks very much

A reader, Sharon, writes (19 January 2005):

Yes there is, but you nead to start taking it 3 day or so before your periods are due. It's called Primolut. Just ask your doctor. I always have some for just such occasions, also good if doing any long haul flights. Last thing you want when stuck on a plain for 20 plus hours.

Hope this helps.

A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (10 January 2005):

Bev Conolly agony auntMy understanding of birth control pills is that in each month's pack there are 21 pills containing progestin and/or estrogen and 7 containing nothing (or sugar only). When you finish the progestin pills and start on the "nothing" pills, your period starts. There isn't any health reason to have a period; it's simply a way to confirm that you're not pregnant. So, if you're already on the pill, simply skip the "nothing" pills and start a new pack of progestin pills to delay your period.

Planned Parenthood's website

http://www4.plannedparenthood.org/pp2/portal/medicalinfo/birthcontrol/pub-contraception-pill.xml

contains further information.

Please note that I do not have any medical training, and this information is simply my understanding of the way this contraceptive works, so please speak to a health professional first.

If you're not already on the pill, you will want to see a doctor and discuss the matter anyway.
