I'm 24 and have recently seen a photo of myself in the paper, where it looks, to all intents and purposes, as though i am abusing a young lady. even worse - the story's about domestic abuse.

what the paper doesn't say is that i don't actually live with the girl who's in the photo, and that i've never hit anyone.

the photo has been taken from behind me, so i didn't even know it was being taken.

what should i do?

Frank B Kermit agony auntThe area of law is defamation. You need to gather proof of the damages that this caused you, so start keeping written track.

Most entertainment law books have entire sections on defamation: Libel and Slander. They can tell you what you need.

Contact a lawyer BEFORE you contact the paper, as the lawyer has experience with how to word your initial approach.

Is your face in the picture as it was taken from behind? Are you named in the article? Are you at all recognizeable? These are the things you will need to prepare in your statment.

Do NOT wait. The longer you wait, the worse it is going to be for you.

You need to get a lawyer first and then start talking to the paper.

Newspapers get complaints like this everyday and if you have seen the egregious state of the New York Times, it doesnt phase them. You need a lawyer to make sure this get addressed, and the mistaken impression gets corrected in the with appropriate visability in the paper. If they have a web site, the on-line verson will need to be corrected and a notation added.

You'll probably also want to get the picture out of their image library so it doesnt pop up again.

I would call the paper and talk to the 'head' guy. This slanderous to your good character. Then I'd visit a lawyer and see if you have a case. Good luck, my friend
