Parents and sex...

Question - (6 February 2010) 4 Answers - (Newest, 6 February 2010)
A male United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Right... I'm 17 and my girlfriend has just turned 16. I have to admit we haven't been in a relationship that long although it seems like we've been together for ages. We just really love being around eachother and having a laugh a lot... which is obviously why we are together.

Anyway, the other night she came over and we ended up having sex. It was one of those moments where we both wanted it and it felt right. However, my parents obviously thought they could stop me doing it by taking the condoms that I had away from me. I didn't know this. No warning or talk or anything. They had probably heard she was coming over and known where they were in my room and took them. When I was looking for them I noticed they had gone and sure enough the first place I looked in my parents closet, they were there in front of me. (lol)

It's not the fact that they took them away from me cos I found them anyway and we did it. It's the principal. They obviously want to stop me and I don't see why they should. We are both above the legal age and it felt right, plus we were very careful. I wouldn't just have sex with any random person. This kind of same thing happened with my ex girlfriend as well about a year ago, however they never physically took anything away from me like they did the other day. with my ex, they just said I should be careful. I knew they didn't want me doing it with her anyway though.

It just really annoys me that they want to stop me. I'm like... going to be 18 in the summer and I feel I'm old enough. Ok my girlfriend is a year and a half younger but we're still not breaking the law. We both have feelings for eachother and it feels right. Even her parents have said that their fine with her doing it. I just wish my parents wouldn't try to get involved with my sex life because at the end of the day they can't stop me anyway and it's our decision.

Has anyone had this same kind of problem with parents? Or have any ideas as to what I should do? I'm just really fustrated more than anything.

Thanks for reading x

A female reader, Miamine United Kingdom +, writes (6 February 2010):

Miamine agony auntYes, they have no right to invade your privacy, or decide what to do about your love life, as you say you and the girl are both legally over age.

However they can say no sex in their house, and they can refuse to let her come over to see you.

They are being very silly. You were very sensible to hunt them condoms down to make sure your girlfriend was safe. They seem to have brought you up well, and you don't take risks because you are caught up in passion. What they did was dangerous, a less responsible teenager would have gone without protection.

You need to talk to them, without anger, but with firmness. Agree, that if they want, you'll have sex elsewhere, but you can't have them continuing to treat you like a child, when you are soon to be 18. At 17, you should be able to have some privacy. I suggest you think about moving away to study, or starting work as soon as you are able, and moving somewhere else.

Fatherly Advice agony auntI agree that communication is much healthier than swiping condoms. Aside from that it is time for the classic advice to all teens.

Teenagers, are you tired of you parents telling you what to do?

Act now! Move out, get a job, and start paying your own way!

While you still know everything.

Yeah I can understand about not doing it in the house. I suppose thats fair enough but I would just rather they spoke to me about it rather than just doing something a little childish.

I don't blame your parents. you are only 17 and already you are having sex with your girlfriends. are you ready to bear the consequences if one of them falls pregnant? I don't think so.
