Our mother and cousin

Question - (15 March 2008) 4 Answers - (Newest, 16 March 2008)
A female South Africa age 30-35, *ieslx writes:

I am 15-years-old and have a 13-year-old sister. About a year ago our parents got divorced, and my sister and I are living with our mother since then.

Over the past 6 months or so, a cousin of ours - our mother's sister's 17-year-old son - has been a regular visitor to our home, and our mother and cousin have been spending a lot of time together.

His visits have become so regular, that my sister and I suspect there might be something going on between them.

A couple of weeks ago our mother told us she was expecting a baby but did not say who the father is. She is already starting to show.

My sister and I think our cousin might be the father. What should we do? We find it horrifying to think our cousin might be having sex with our mother.

We have never actually caught them in the act, but they always seem to be together.

Isn't it illegal for relatives to be sexually involved? Should we approach our mother about this? Should we discuss this with other family members? Should we approach the authorities?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (16 March 2008):

It sure sounds suspicious. Your cousin and mom are spending a lot of time together, and suddenly she winds up pregnant. I definitely think they are having sex with each other. The evidence is too circumstantial.

Or do you know if your mother has slept with other men? Do your cousin and mom leave your house together for hours on end? If so, they may be doing somewhere to have sex. I think the only way to get the truth out is to ask one, or both of them. Or try spying on them. Like if they go to your mom's room when they're together, I think that's a dead giveaway that they are having sex. Let us know what you find out.

Well, this relationship would be illegal in most countries. Cousins - OK. Aunt & nephew/ No, not good.

But you'd be as well to ascertain that your suspicions are actual facts before insinuating anything. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. Only they know. Quite what will happen if your suspicions are correct is anyones guess.

Variety agony auntI would talk to a trusted family member about it if you're sure its happening. But first think if there is anybody that could be the father apart from your cousin. Maybe they are just friends. x
