Although at time it has been extremely tough, we have managed to sustain our relationship.Lately, we had discussions about opening up the relationship, thinking that it would be healthier for us when it comes to our sexual outlets. We promised that we would tell each other everything if were were to do anything with anyone else. But once we open up the relationship, is it possible for us to close it up again? Also, is this the solution to our long distance relationship? (we know that we will get back together in about one year because of our own reasons)

Sounds like you guys may be able to pull this off because of your great communication skills. By being honest and talking about it, you seem to be making it transparent that you love each other but want each other to be free to move on if it happens naturally. If it doesnt, great, you two will be back together when time permits. I say go for it, be mature about it, keep communicating everything.
