writes:Hi im 16 and have been on the pill for about 4 years. A while back i started to get a brown coloured discharge with the odd spot of blood in it but not much. I noticed it again about 2 weeks later and then it went. However its started again now and my mum has made me an appointment at the doctors. i'm not sexually active and am only on the pill so i can control my periods. I was wondering if anyone has been in the same situation or have any idea on what it could be. I have heard that being on the pill for 5 yrs or more can increase risks or cervical cancer so im coming off it soon. I know i get paroniod about cancer because im so afraid of getting it and i can't help for be afraid it might be that although i know i'm only young and that i havent got the brown discharge all of the time. I really need help do you think it is just an infection that has come back because it wasn't treated last time when it seemed to go away or could it be something more serious. please help.

Hi, I can't say on an individual basis for you but you are just like me. I started the pill when I was 14 for 3 week duration periods, brown discharge and sickness. I am now 33 had a baby and I was told that when I had a child my 'cycle' would change. I wasn't sexually active until I was 17 so that wasn't to blame. I've had every scrap, probe, scan, x-ray done on my pelvis and basically I have a 'thickened endometrium' (lining of womb). I am now on an injection that stabilises the discharge, irregular periods and me basically completely fed up with dealing with this. It is a contraceptive but while it is amazing and has stopped all the issues, it causes bone loss which for me is an issue at 33. You need to ask your doctor for a 'trans-vaginal ultrasound'. You may have a cyst or just thickening like me and it CAN be treated. Do it now but please don't worry about the worst case scenario, cervical cancer, just understand your body and know what is right for you.
