I am planning a travel with my gf (who lives in Spain) and I would like some advice...we are intending to go to the USA next summer and would like to know what is a better City. New York City or Los Angeles. I would like to know the pros and cons of both citys by people that have been there and or live there. We have several contacts in california so that is the most logical option, as we have no friends in NYC. the thing is I am from London and as it is the first time I am going to a different continent by myself (I visited Florida with my parennts as a young teenager) I want an experiance in a different environment then what I am used too (London is sometimes considered the NYC of the EU) dont get me wrong I expect NYC and London to be completly different places but they sound similar if you know what I meanand then theres Los Angeles, my gf is spanish and I have been told there are many hispanics in LA so this would be an advantage, as we both really enjoy mexican food. and plus we could go to the mexican border so it is an option to visit there. argghhh I just dont know what to decide.so can anyone please tell me the pros and cons of NYC and Los Angeles thank you very much for your help. I've been to both and they are very different. One you will have to have transportation to get around (LA), the other you can walk, take the subway or take cabs (NYC).
NYC is very international, lots of people from all over the world, interesting neighborhoods (some not so good), world class art, theater, dining, shopping, people watching. I love the hubbub and energy.
From NYC, you can take a short train ride (under 3 hrs) down to Washington DC and spend a few days there too, stopping in Philadelphia on the way down or back up, or go up to Boston (3.5 hr train ride), which is rich in colonial history and has a different feel, and on the way, pop into Newport, Rhode Island. http://www.amtrak.com/
LA is also international, much more spread out over a large area, great people watching, shopping, dining, Hollywood!, art as well. The weather is probably more reliable in LA. Yes, lots of Spanish speakers in LA as well. Close to San Diego, a wonderful city with a small-town feel, and a short plane ride to San Francisco for a day or two or three, and also close to Las Vegas, if you're into glitzy gambling and showgirl type shows.
Frankly, if you have contacts in a city, I'd probably go there for your trip; it helps to have friends act as local guides.
I've lived in London too and honestly, it is not like NYC to me at all, they have very different vibes, if that makes any sense. I expect you'll find lots of similarities, but NYC is a much more concentrated brew in my opinion.
Personally, I would suggest you price out a three-legged journey, from London to LA to NYC back to London or the other way, as well as looking at the individual city pricing.
I guess it depends on what kind of summer trip you are looking for. If it is the height of summer, NYC can be hot and humid and not very comfortable, so look at that timing too.
I hope you have a great trip!

Oh also, as far as going to the Mexican border if you choose to go to California, don't go there. Stay in California, Tijuana is having a BIG problem with drug trafficking with a lot of crime, especially against tourists.

Okay, I've never been to NYC, but I've been to L.A. numerous times. I know many people that love NY and a lot of people that hate NY. The pros: culture, big city, shopping, broadway shows, etc. The cons: dirty, vermin running around, and yes the possibility of getting mugged.
L.A. is definitely safe in my opinion as long as you don't go into the "bad" parts where there's gangs or the bad side of Hollywood where there's drug dealers and prostitutes everywhere. The good thing about L.A. is that you don't have to go into the heart of L.A. it's so big and you can go to a lot of nice beaches. The weather is nicer, that's for sure. If you want to travel further down south you can go to Anaheim and go to Disneyland (a personal favorite of mine) or even further south to my favorite city of all time, San Diego. I'm a bit biased though, I've lived in California my whole life!
