He seems real sweet, but he's already using pet names and getting clingy. I agreed to go on a second date because the first one was a lot of fun. He was very different in person. Afterwards there were several more texts mushy enough to make me cringe and finally one that made me snap (he insulted a project I am working on, though not intentionally). I don't want to go on that second date anymore.Should I tell him I'm not interested now or just play it out and make it apparent there's no third date?

If you don't think there is any chance on a third date then I wouldn't even bother with the second one. He may become more clingy and then you just have a bad situation. Tell him over the phone as nicely as possible that you are not interested in a second date. If I put myself in his position I would not want to go on a date when there is no chance of anything happening in the future.
