Even before we started dating we would tell eachother we loved each other and such...but in a few months he'll be leaving to join the Navy and we don't want to loose eachother in the process. I've thought about it for a while and the only thing I can really come up with would be engagement if the relationship lasts til his departure....I need another opinion on whether or not that is the right thing to do. We really do love each other and have been talking slightly about marriage....Good idea, or bad?

You didn't mention how long you've been friends. If you're still best friends, it's likely that you couldn't possible "lose" each other.
If you've known each other for some time, and you feel ready to be married, then go for it - get engaged. Don't get engaged out of fear of losing each other.
